RUTH MARIE MARTIN
Funeral services for Ruth Marie Martin, age 88 of Tuttle, Oklahoma were held 10:30 am Wednesday December 20, 2006 in the Sowers Memorial Chapel of Sevier Funeral Home, Tuttle.
Ruth Marie Martin was born November 7, 1918 in Hughes County near Allen, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Green and Minnie Owens. She died Sunday December 17, 2006 in Tuttle.
Interment was in Fairview Cemetery, Tuttle under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home.
Ruth married Elmer Martin October 17, 1932. They had been married almost sixty-five and a half years when he died on April 9, 1998.
Ruth was a Sunday School Teacher for forty-three years. Her favorite scripture was Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart: and
lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he
shall direct thy paths.
Her daughter, Venita, said she has heard her mother quote that many times in those hard spots of life.
Ruth and Elmer lived in Duncan, Oklahoma for many years. While living there Ruth owned and operated a gift and crafts business. She designed, pieced, and appliquéd quilts of all sizes which she would hand-quilt. She sold hot air balloon, golf, flower, and doll quilts across the United States. She also made theme quilts about Oklahoma and Texas. Ruth took great pleasure in giving her quilts to family and friends. There is a quilt she and her granddaughter Pam made together, Pam having cross-stitched the blocks. There is one with a sports theme she made for her grandson Martin because of his love of sports. She also made quilts for her great-granddaughters Rana and Amber. At the funeral, the casket was draped with a quilt in loving memory of her extraordinary talent.
In 1977 Ruth and Elmer moved to Tuttle where she continued to teach Sunday School and make her quilts. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tuttle.
Ruth was also preceded in death by her parents and four older brothers: John Pryor “J.P.” Owens, Sid Owens, Fred Owens, and Jess Owens.
Survivors include: her daughter: Venita Shaw and husband Ronald of Tuttle; granddaughter: Pamela Mackey and husband John of Wellston; grandson: Martin Walker of Oklahoma city; great granddaughters: Rana Camp and husband Kenny of Oklahoma City, Amber Leafty and husband Johnny of Wellston; great great grandson: Johnny Edward Leafty; great great granddaughters: Kaylynn and Dallas Leafty; nephew: Bill Griffin and wife Glendene of Allen, Oklahoma; other nephews, nieces, and friends in Tuttle, Allen and Duncan, Oklahoma and in California, Arizona and Arkansas.
Interment was in Fairview Cemetery, Tuttle under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home.
The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Wayne Huey and to Roseann Yeakley, administrator of Tuttle Care Center, and to her staff for their compassionate care. Thank you, also, to Full Life Hospice for their special services in these last days.
