LILA DARLENE GURLEY

Lila Darlene Gurley age 70 of Newcastle, Okla. passed away Friday, April 27, 2007 of severe blood clots.

She was born on July 19, 1936, Oklahoma City, the 2nd child of two children born to Harold Hanson and Juanita Jones Hanson. Her family lived west of Lawton on a farm near the communities of Chattanooga, Cache, Indiahoma, and in California during WWII as an “Okie”, then back to Oklahoma City. She went to approximately 12 schools, graduating from Central High School (Oklahoma City), in 1954. Throughout the years she enjoyed seeing old classmates at school reunions.

Lila married Jimmy Gurley on January 17 1969 in Oklahoma City and together they raised 4 children. In 1974 they moved to Newcastle into the home she designed. In her earlier years Lila worked doing farm work, ironing for others, was a soda fountain helper and even a key punch operator. She later owned and operator a daycare school called “Merry Pop-Ins” and a real estate company. She acquired several properties that she enjoyed fixing up for sale or rent. She was not afraid of work or risk. At an auction, she bought three properties unknown to her and made a profit on all of them. Her first love was caring for her flowers and seeing the fruit of her hard work, during the months of April and May when her irises are in full bloom. She loved getting ready for the coming Christmas and seeing the grand-children opening their many presents. She also acquired a collection of jewelry that she is giving to her grand-daughters. Over the past several years she and Jimmy enjoyed traveling with friends.

Lila was the strength of her family all of her life. All of her children and grandchildren knew they could depend on her for any kind of help. She took care of her mother several years. She was liked and loved by anyone that was acquainted with her. She was quick witted, could joke and could cut-up with anyone, anywhere. She was always a wonderful, loving, hard working wife and Jimmy loves her a whole bunch. Her loss is devastating to all her family. No more going to her for help except in prayers, until we see her in Heaven with her parents Harold and Juanita and her son “Tony”, where she is still caring for and loving people.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Jimmy Gurley of the home in Newcastle; four children and 14 grandchildren, whom are Delilah Stalsworth and husband Michael of Newcastle and their five children, Lee Ann Cantu and husband Stephen of Tuttle and their three children, Mark Moses and wife Lisa of Newcastle and their two children, Dale Moses of Newcastle and his four children; also one great granddaughter, “Lila Ann;” one brother, Dale Hanson and wife Juaveeta of Locksburg, Ark.; one brother-in-law, Jerry Gurley of Pottsboro, Texas; and one sister-in-law, Marilyn Sympson and husband Herbert of Newcastle.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at the Mayridge Baptist Church at 4617 S. May Ave., Oklahoma City. Viewing will be at the Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Newcastle at 3132 Tri City Ave. 387-2243. Her body’s temporary resting space is in the Fairview Cemetery in Tuttle.
