Series revives memories of Audra

On Monday, two people told me how much they appreciated the series the paper is running about Audra Matheny and Steve Wilson.

One was photographer Don Snart, who told me he couldn’t understand why this was the first he was hearing about Audra’s murder. His family lived in Tuttle at the time, and his daughters were only a few years older than she was, but they never heard a thing about it.

The other was city attorney David Perryman, who said that he had known the family, and that they had attended services at the Church of Christ together. Perryman said that he had even hosted fellowships at his house, and the Wilson family had attended.

Back then, no one thought anything out of the ordinary was taking place once the Wilsons were back in their own home.

I do not know if I am more surprised by the many people who knew nothing about the crime, or by those who I have known for years and never imagined they had any connection to one of the most tragic incidents to take place in this area.

In the coming weeks I plan to write about Steve Wilson, the trial, and how Audra’s life and death affected her family and the Tuttle community. I have interviewed many people, but I know there are still more that were affected by this crime and can help the rest of us understand what happened back in 1982.
