American League rallies to win NYPL All-Star Game

Tuttle’s Henson goes 0-for-2.

FISHKILL, NY - Months of meticulous planning came to fruition Tuesday evening as the Hudson Valley Renegades hosted the third annual New York-Penn League All-Star Game.

The two day extravaganza commenced last night with an all-star celebratory banquet. Present at the banquet (held at the Grandview located in Poughkeepsie, New York), were the All-Star players, coaches and umpires, as well as guest speakers Mike Veeck (President of the Goldklang Group) and former major league baseball player Bucky Dent.

Tuttle High School graduate Tyler Henson was selected to the American League All Star team in his second year of professional baseball.

Henson plays for the Class A Short Season Aberdeen Ironbirds. He is hitting .312 and has hit four home runs.

He went 0-for-2 in Tuesday’s All Star Game.

At 6 p.m. Tuesday, the New York-Penn League Home Run Derby kicked off in front of a sold out Dutchess Stadium crowd. Renegades catcher Michael McCormick, one of Hudson Valley's four player representatives, participated in the home run festivities. McCormick, who started for the American League, managed to launch 10 home runs into the Hudson Valley sky. However, when the dust had cleared, catcher Torre Langley stood atop the home run derby mountain.

Following the Derby, the American and National League All-Star squads lined up to battle it out for league bragging rights.

The National Leaguers, jumping out to a 4-0 lead, failed to sustain their early game momentum as the rival A.L. squad tenaciously battled back with three 8th inning runs. At the game's cessation, which saw many substitutions, the American League successfully defended their All-Star Game crown with a 6-4 victory.

The winning pitcher tonight was Lowell Spinners reliever, Felix Ventura. Ventura, who pitched a scoreless 8th inning, surrendered one hit during his brief appearance.

Valley Cats' closer Jason Dominguez, who has pitched spectacularly all season for Tri-City, took the loss having surrendered two 8th inning runs.

In the ninth inning, Noah Krol retired the side in order. With his performance, the Oneonta Tigers reliever earned the save.

The All-Star Player of the Game went to Oneonta's Christopher Carlson. The Tigers first baseman knocked in a go-ahead, run scoring single with two outs in the bottom of the 8th inning. Pitching well in defeat was Jamestown Jammers Garrett Parcell. The right-handed reliever, who struck out two All-Stars in one scoreless inning, was honored as the night's Most Outstanding Pitcher. New York-Penn League action will resume on Thursday following a league wide travel day.
