Tuttle blasts Elgin; goes to Blanchard this week

The second-ranked Tuttle Tigers rolled to a 49-7 victory at home Friday night over Elgin.

It was the District 3A-1 opener for both teams.

Tuttle moved to 4-0 for the season and stayed on course for a showdown in two weeks against third-ranked Clinton. Elgin remained winless at 0-4.

The Tigers used a relentess ground game to whip Elgin, running up 335 yards. Quarterback Sterling Koons didn’t have to pass often, but his two completions both went for touchdowns. Tuttle amassed 387 total yards in offense and limited Elgin to only 31 yards on a the ground and 100 via the passing lanes.

A stout Tiger defense picked off five Elgin passes and recovered two fumbles, including one by Grant Glasser in the Elgin end zone that accounted for the first touchdown of the game. Bobby Stonebreaker’s first of five extra points made it 7-0.

Later in the first quarter, running back Paco Moore scored on a five-yard burst.

Moore would score three more times in the second quarter, on runs of 32 and 19 yards and on a 27-yard pass from Koons. Koons then hooked up with brother Tanner Koons on a TD pass to push the margin at half-time to 42-0.

The Tigers wrapped up the scoring in the third quarter on a 63-yard run by Ethan Biddy.

Coach Philip Koons substituted liberally in the second half with Elgin getting its only score of the game late in the fourth quarter on a three-yard run by Ikwame Tate.

Tuttle has to get past district-rival Blanchard on Friday night on the road to set up next week’s home match up against Clinton.

Blanchard, 1-3, beat Santa Fe South 41-0 last week after dropping close contests in its first three games.

In other area games last week, Bridge Creek walloped Riverside 57-15 and Minco beat Thomas 22-6.

This week, Bridge Creek plays host to Washington and Minco entertains Christian Heritage.
